10 Consumer Trends to Watch Out for in 2010

by Ana on November 19, 2009

Rather than bore you about 2009 and the economy, I want to take a moment and tell you how excited I am for 2010.  I feel hopeful that it will be a better year for everyone–including businesses.  And what better way to look forward to the next year than reading up on consumer trends? Ok, maybe there are better ways, but we like to think staying abreast of trends is important.

Trendwatching.com recently released their “10 Crucial Consumer Trends for 2010.” You can read it in its entirety by clicking the link below, but we thought we’d give you a brief overview here:

1. Business as Usual: To earn consumers respect and dollars, you have to be a genuine “corporate citizen” and keep pace with consumers demands.

2. Urbany: Majority of the world lives in urban areas and those who don’t want to shop and be like the “urbanites.”  This means more people wanting to try different and “cool” things not to mention an increased demand in online transparency.

3. Real-Time Reviews: You know how you can actually, for the most part, monitor what people are saying about your company? Well, plan on it all spiraling out of control.  Soon, reviews of products will all be in real-time with more consumers engaging in actual conversations regarding each others opinions on brands/products/services.

4. (F)luxury: The concept of luxury is in the eye of the beholder. It could be anything anyone wants it to be. This leaves room for companies to define what luxury is or position a traditionally non-luxurious product or service as a luxurious one.

5.  Mass Mingling: Contrary to popular belief, the Internet and social networks haven’t turned humanity into hermits but instead have given them a venue to connect with others in real life.  The Internet and social networks are only a means to find people to actually meet in person.

6. Eco-Easy: One of the best moves towards a more sustainable world is by leaving people no choice.  For example, banning the use of plastic bottles.

7. Tracking & Alerting: Consumers want information–period.

8. Embedded Generosity: We are a “generous generation,” and thus, opportunities to be generous will become simpler and easier.

9. Profile Myning: With so much of our lives on the Internet for anyone to see, expect more people seeking services that will protect or store their information or hand over digital assets to appointed family or friends in case of an emergency or death.

10. Maturialism: Meaning “mature materialism,” today’s consumer is more open to “daring and diverse” advertisements–event products/services.
